The Shar-Pei has a purple tongue. Shar-Peis are depicted on Chinese pottery dating back to 206 B.C. The wrinkled coat of a Shar-Pei made the dog difficult for its adversary to grab in dog fighting. Shar-Peis almost died out during the Communist Revolution. Shar-Peis have a severe, frowning expression but are actually very loving dogs.
